Saving Your Car From Rust

Posted on: 6 March 2017

There are many things that you can do to prevent rust from accumulating on your vehicle. However, even if you take all of the right steps toward avoiding rust, this problem is inevitable. You will need to remove rust in order to protect your car in the long-term.

Gathering Your Supplies

The great thing about rust repair is that it is not challenging. However, it is time-consuming. The supplies that you will need to get the job done include:

  • Poly-sheeting
  • Sand paper
  • Scraper
  • Epoxy primer
  • Body filler
  • Paint sprayer
  • Car paint

The poly-sheeting is taped on the vehicle. The poly-sheeting needs to be spread over the fenders and engine. Make sure that the poly-sheeting is at least a foot or two away from the section where you will be repairing the rust spot. This will help protect the areas that you are not working on.

Preparing The Area

The entire area needs to be sanded and cleaned to prepare for the application of a new coat of paint. Use a scraper to remove any blistered paint. Sand the area using 40-grit sandpaper. The paint edges need to be feathered. After thoroughly sanding the area, it must be cleaned in preparation for applying a coat of paint.

To prepare the area for being painted, the prep solvent from the manufacturer must be applied. Wait for the epoxy primer to dry.

Applying A Body Filler

If there are pits in the metal, they need to be filled with a body filler. The epoxy primer also needs to be sanded with a 1000 grit sandpaper. Make sure that the sandpaper is wet throughout the process. Wait for it to dry and then sand drips with a lower sandpaper.

Painting The Vehicle

If you are concerned about the appearance of your vehicle, make sure to find the exact paint color as the rest of your car. Otherwise, the corrective coat of paint will stand out. Apply the paint coat by spraying. Allow each coat of paint to dry before spraying a new coat on. Apply a clear coat afterward and buff.

Hiring Professionals

Rust is a major problem for a vehicle. The rust can spread and eventually ruin it. For this reason, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to have the rust repaired. Then, you can be sure that the problem is under control and will not ruin your car.
